     Search Engine Submission F.A.Q.

Q. Why should I submit my site to the search engines?

A. The search engines are the most inexpensive form of advertising and in our opinion the most successful. You can get your website listed in hundreds of places on the Internet for free if you do the submissions yourself and for only $8/month if we do it for you. If you are serious about getting visitors to your website submitting to the search engines is a must.

Q. Why should I submit every month?

A. There are several reasons to keep your web site promotion current. Here are just a few:
  • Link pages move older links to the bottom of the list, resubmitting puts you back on top.
  • Search engines have a tendency to drop or lose sites from time to time.
  • Some web sites offer what's new to the net sections every time you submit you get added to these lists.

Q. When will I see my site added to the search engines?

A. Please see our list of major search engines here

After successfully submitting your website to a search engine, directory or link page it is up to those pages to add your site. Most link pages are automated and will add your site almost instantly. The major search engines like Google and Hotbot will send a "spider" to your site within a few weeks of submission. That spider will read and index your website and then schedule your site to be listed. The amount of time to get added to the major search engines varies almost daily and depends on several factors. It is a good rule of thumb to expect 1 to 2 months before your site will show up on any major search engines, and possibly up to 3 months or longer for some search engines, sometimes this is much quicker. This is just another reason that it is important to submit your website monthly.

Q. Do you submit to Yahoo! the Open Directory and Overture (GoTo.com) under the basic and advanced plans?

A. Here is the way it works.

Yahoo! charges $299 for a submission.  That $299 does not guarantee that they will add your site, just that they will consider it.  Unfortunately the $299 is non refundable even if the site is not added.  Yahoo! however is very important.  We have a solution to this problem which is actually quite simple.  Yahoo! also uses Google for some of their listings.  We do submit to Google so if your site is added to Google it will also have the ability to be included in results on Yahoo!.  We submit to Google for no extra charge as part of our monthly service.  Google is rather slow in adding new sites but your results should be well worth the wait once it is added.

The Open Directory or DMOZ.org is a free directory which is also quite valuable.  We will submit your site to this directory but we need a little more information from you.  You will need to go to DMOZ.org and find the correct category your site belongs in.  This is done by clicking on the various categories until you narrow it down as far as you can.  This will be where your site should be placed.  Here is an example.  If you were a Veterinarian in Florida a possible DMOZ category for your site would be:

http://dmoz.org/Health/Animal/Veterinary_Medicine/Veterinarians/United_States/Florida/

Here is one quick tip on finding your Open Directory category.  Instead of clicking on every link and working your way down to your correct category try searching for a site like yours and then choose the best category for your site specifically, for example if you were and Accountant in New York try a search for New York Accountant from the main page of DMOZ.org.  You will be taken to a list of possible categories, you can then choose your perfect fit from the options provided.  This trick doesn't always work for obscure sites but it may save you some time.

Once you find the correct category send it to dmoz "at" dsr1 "dot" com (replace the "at" with "@" and the "dot" with ".") with your domain name and we will get it submitted for you.  Please be aware the Open Directory is a free service run by volunteers and a submission does not guarantee addition.

Finally Overture.com which used to be known as GOTO.com is a pay per click search engine.  They are a valuable source for website traffic if your budget allows it. You can open an account with them for a minimum of $25 and then bid on keywords.  Other pay per click search engines are also gaining popularity including Enhance, Findwhat, and Search123.  We have included links to these search engines below.  Pay per click search engines are gaining popularity because you only pay when someone clicks on your link, allowing you to better gauge your advertising spending.

We recommend the following pay per click search engines.

Q. What is the difference between the basic and advanced plans?

A. Our basic plan is designed for those customers that want to make sure their website is submitted every month without worrying about it themselves. We offer a hassle free no nonsense approach to website submissions. If you are happy with your website and already included the correct meta tags in your site, the basic plan is the way to go. If you are unsure if your site is optimized for the search engines our advanced plan will help you out. A member of our staff will review your website to make sure it is all ready to go before your website is submitted. If your page is lacking in an area we will suggest improvements and even create your meta tags for you based on your keywords and phrases. There is a one time fee of $39.99 for the advanced plan and then after that it is exactly the same as the basic plan $8 per month. If you are unsure of pages readiness to be submitted we highly suggest the advanced plan.  If your website reviewer does not find any problems or does not have any valuable advice you will not be charged for the review.  Basically this is a risk free way to make sure your site is search engine friendly before it is submitted.

Q. What is a meta tag?

A. A meta tag or <meta> tag is the way you can tell the major search engines what you page is about. The major search engines will go to your website once it is submitted and read these tags to figure out where to place your site. The meta tags tell the search engine your pages title, description, and keywords. Without these tags you will find it very difficult to achieve a high ranking on any of the major search engines.

Q. Do I need meta tags?

A. Absolutely. If your site does not have meta tags you are losing out on traffic. A website without meta tags is very difficult for a search engine to place correctly.

Q. How can you submit my web site every month for only $8? That sounds too cheap.

A. You have probably noticed that other web site promotion services charge far more for this service and that is in fact very true. Most submission companies do basically the same thing submit your site to hundreds of locations for you. You can pay $99 or $8 in most cases it is the exact same service. DSR1 Search Engine Submission has built a loyal following over the past five years and we have done this by offering a fair price and good service.

Q. I have seen other companies that submit to 800000 search engines why do you submit to a smaller number?

A. Submission companies that offer 800000 submissions are simply sending your website to the bottom end of the Internet link pages. These pages may no longer exist and in many cases were simply set-up to collect e-mail addresses to use or sell as they see fit. Be very careful if using one of these submission services. Remember in the website promotion game it is quality over quantity every time!

.
A. We have an example list as well as the most current addition times listed here.

.
Q. Will I receive spam or junk mail once my site is broadcasted to the world?
.
A. Just like any other form of advertising once your name is out there people will try to sell you things.  The same thing happens when you put your company in the Yellow Pages.  DSR1 does however take some precautions to limit the amount of "junk" mail you will receive.  We do not submit your e-mail address to the link pages unless you specifically request us to do so.  This will greatly lower the amount of spam you receive.  There are few major search engines we submit to that require an e-mail address along with a submission but they are reputable companies like Hotbot.  We will never submit your e-mail address to a link page unless you sign a waiver and we highly recommend not having your e-mail address submitted.
